Speaking Latin (Active Latin)

Active Latin speaking: the Living Latin approach, resources for spoken Latin practice, how to start speaking Latin, key events (SALVI Biduum, Paideia, Vivarium Novum).

Speaking Latin is optional but powerful. The Active Latin movement has demonstrated that using Latin as a spoken language accelerates reading fluency by building intuitive grammar feel that drilling alone doesn't provide.

Why Speaking Helps Reading

  • Automaticity: Speaking forces you to produce the correct form instantly — no time to consciously parse
  • Input volume: Conversations produce 60 words/minute of Latin vs. 5–10 via translation
  • Grammar internalization: You stop thinking "this needs a dative" and start feeling that mihi is right

You don't need to speak Latin fluently to benefit — even passive listening to spoken Latin (ScorpioMartianus, Quomodo Dicitur?) helps.

How to Start Speaking Latin

Level 1: Listen First (Any Level)

Before producing any spoken Latin, spend several weeks consuming spoken Latin:

  • Watch ScorpioMartianus videos daily
  • Listen to Latinitium Podcast or Quomodo Dicitur?
  • Hear LLPSI chapters read aloud (Latinum Institute recordings)

Level 2: Simple Phrases (Novice–Intermediate)

Start with basic conversational Latin from LLPSI Colloquia Personarum:

  • Quid est nomen tibi? — What is your name?
  • Nomen mihi est... — My name is...
  • Quot annos habes? — How old are you?
  • Ubi habitas? — Where do you live?
  • Libenter! — Gladly!

Level 3: Structured Practice (Intermediate)

  • Join a SALVI Biduum event (3-day weekend; ~$300; no prior speaking experience needed)
  • Find a language exchange partner in r/latin or the LLPSI Facebook groups
  • Use LLPSI Colloquia Personarum in self-talk or with a study partner

Level 4: Immersion (Advanced)

  • Attend SALVI Rusticatio (week-long immersion in West Virginia)
  • Apply for Paideia Living Latin in Rome (summer program)
  • Consider Accademia Vivarium Novum (Frascati, Italy — most intensive)

Classical Pronunciation for Speaking

The Active Latin community uses Classical pronunciation (restored). See Pronunciation guide for full details. The most important features for speaking:

  • C is always hard /k/ — never "ch"
  • V is a semivowel /w/ — not "v"
  • Vowel lengths are observed (long vowels are held longer)
  • AE is pronounced /aɪ/ (like "eye")
