〜あっての / 〜あってこそ (only possible because of — prerequisite)
N1 grammar patterns 〜あっての and 〜あってこそ: expressing that X is an indispensable prerequisite for Y. 〜あってこそ adds emphatic force.
〜あっての / 〜あってこそ
Formality Level: Semi-formal to Formal — speeches, formal writing, expressions of gratitude
Classical/Literary Origin: Both patterns derive from あって (gerundive of ある, "to exist/be") + の (nominaliser) or こそ (classical emphatic particle). こそ is a classical Japanese emphatic particle (already discussed in Lesson 1) that appeared in the Man'yoshu and throughout classical poetry to mark the one true reason for a state. 〜あってこそ thus carries classical emphatic resonance: "it is precisely because of X that Y is possible."
Structure
| Pattern | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜あっての | Noun + あっての + Noun | 皆の支えあっての成功 |
| 〜あってこそ | Noun + あってこそ + [clause] | 努力あってこそ意味がある |
〜あっての nominalises the prerequisite relationship: "a Y that exists because of X" — modifies the following noun directly.
〜あってこそ creates a predicate construction with emphatic こそ: "It is precisely because of X that Y is possible/meaningful."
Meaning
Both express that X is an indispensable prerequisite for Y — without X, Y could not exist or would lose its meaning.
- 〜あっての: X is the essential prerequisite for Y (noun-modifying)
- 〜あってこそ: Precisely because of X, Y is possible/meaningful (emphatic predicate)

Comparison with N2 Equivalent
| Pattern | Register | Meaning | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜あっての | Formal | Y that only exists because of X (noun-modifying) | Requires following noun; prerequisite is definitive |
| 〜あってこそ | Formal/emphatic | Precisely because of X, Y is possible | こそ adds emphatic "precisely because"; standalone predicate |
| 〜のおかげで | All registers | Thanks to / owing to | Grateful acknowledgement; does not imply absolute indispensability as strongly |
| 〜があれば/〜があってこそ | All registers | If X is there / only with X | 〜あってこそ is more formal and implies categorical necessity |
When NOT to Use
- 〜あっての cannot be used as a predicate alone: ❌ 皆の協力あっての。(Must modify a noun: 皆の協力あっての成功です。)
- Do not use for incidental rather than indispensable prerequisites: ❌ 雨あってこそ、散歩が楽しい。(Rain may enhance a walk but is not indispensable; use 〜があると/〜なら for non-indispensable conditions.)
- Do not confuse with 〜ならではの: 〜ならでは = exclusivity/unique quality; 〜あっての = indispensable prerequisite. A person's dedication is あっての their success; the result is ならでは of their unique character.
