The secondary activity is typically something substantial, ongoing, and worthy of mention: writing novels, teaching, volunteering, raising children, conducting research. This is a key nuance: かたわら is not used for trivial or brief secondary actions. It appears frequently in journalistic profiles of people with notable dual roles.

There is also a slight implication of balance and dedication — the secondary activity is not neglected but genuinely maintained alongside the primary one.
