〜ことなく (without doing — literary absolute negation)

N1 grammar pattern 〜ことなく: literary 'without doing X' expressing complete, absolute non-occurrence of an action throughout a period. Higher register than 〜ずに or 〜ないで.

〜ことなく

Formality Level: Literary / Formal — literary prose, formal writing, academic writing

Classical Origin: ことなく derives from the classical nominaliser こと (the abstract event/fact of doing X) + なく (classical negative gerundive of ない). The construction means "without the event/fact of doing X occurring." The classical nominaliser こと adds an abstract, distanced quality that makes ことなく more literary and absolute than the functional negative ずに.

Structure

Form Example
V (dictionary form) + ことなく 諦めることなく
V (dictionary form) + ことなく + [main clause] 休むことなく研究を続けた

Meaning

"Without doing X / Not once doing X throughout"

〜ことなく emphasises that X did not occur at all throughout a period or process. It is more literary and absolute than 〜ずに (functional non-performance) and much more formal than 〜ないで (casual non-performance).

Comparison with ずに and ないで

Pattern Register Nuance Request Form
〜ことなく Literary/formal Absolute non-occurrence throughout; noble/literary quality ✗ (cannot form requests)
〜ずに Formal/neutral Functional non-performance; matter-of-fact ✗ (unnatural in requests)
〜ないで Neutral/casual Simple non-performance; casual to neutral ✓ (〜ないでください)

The Request Rule: Only 〜ないでください forms a direct prohibition request. 〜ことなく and 〜ずに cannot form requests.

When NOT to Use

  • Do not use in casual conversation: Use ないで or ずに in spoken contexts.
  • Do not use for requests: ❌ 走ることなくください. Use 走らないでください.
  • Do not use for very short-duration non-performance: 〜ことなく works best for sustained absence over time or meaningful non-occurrence. For a single moment: use 〜ずに.
