〜こそ / 〜だからこそ — JLPT N2 Grammar

Learn 〜こそ and 〜だからこそ to place emphatic focus on a specific element — 'it is precisely X' and 'precisely because of X.'

Pattern

〜こそ / 〜だからこそ / 〜てこそ (koso / da kara koso / te koso)

Structure

  • Noun + こそ (emphatic focus on noun)
  • Verb (て-form) + こそ (only by doing X can Y be achieved)
  • 〜だからこそ (precisely because of this/that reason)
  • 〜からこそ (precisely because — attaches to various forms)

Formality Level

All registers — こそ appears in casual speech, formal writing, official speeches. More emphatic uses tend toward formal/written.

Meaning

〜こそ: Places strong exclusive emphasis on the marked element. Means "it is precisely X," "X above all," "X is the very thing." Implies that X — and not other factors — is the most important or defining element.

〜てこそ: "Only when/by doing X can Y truly be achieved." Emphasizes that Y requires X as a necessary and sufficient condition.

〜だからこそ: "Precisely because of this reason, X." Emphasizes that the given reason is the decisive, specific factor behind a conclusion.

Examples

Japanese Reading Romaji English
今こそ、行動を起こす時だ。 いまこそ、こうどうをおこすときだ。 ima koso, kōdō o okosu toki da. Now is precisely the time to take action.
彼の努力こそが、成功の鍵だった。 かれのどりょくこそが、せいこうのかぎだった。 kare no doryoku koso ga, seikō no kagi datta. It was precisely his effort that was the key to success.
失敗してこそ、人は本当に成長する。 しっぱいしてこそ、ひとはほんとうにせいちょうする。 shippai shite koso, hito wa hontō ni seichō suru. Only through failure does a person truly grow.
困難だからこそ、挑戦する価値がある。 こんなんだからこそ、ちょうせんするかちがある。 konnan da kara koso, chōsen suru kachi ga aru. Precisely because it is difficult, it is worth challenging.
信頼関係こそ、チームワークの基盤である。 しんらいかんけいこそ、チームワークのきばんである。 shinrai kankei koso, chīmuwāku no kiban de aru. A relationship of trust is precisely the foundation of teamwork.

Comparison with Other Emphasis Patterns

Pattern Type Example
〜こそ Exclusive focus 今こそ (now is THE time)
〜さえ Extreme case ("even X") 今さえ行けば (even now, if you go)
〜でも Inclusive ("even X") 今でも間に合う (even now, it is in time)
〜が Subject focus marker 彼が行った (HE [not someone else] went)

こそ vs さえ:

  • こそ = "precisely X" (positive, defining focus)
  • さえ = "even X" (surprising inclusion, usually the minimum or extreme case)

Example: 今こそ行くべきだ = "NOW is precisely when you should go" (affirmative emphasis) 今さえ行けば間に合う = "If you go even NOW (at this last chance), you can make it" (extreme case)

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ 彼こそは行きます → こそ and は do not combine in standard modern Japanese. Use: 彼こそ行くべきだ.
  • ❌ だからこそのに → こそ and のに conflict logically; do not combine.
  • ✓ これこそが問題の核心だ → correct emphatic focus structure.
