〜たところ — JLPT N2 Grammar
Learn 〜たところ to express the discovery of an unexpected result upon completing an action, used in formal reports and investigations.
Pattern
〜たところ (ta tokoro)
Structure
- Verb (た-form/past) + ところ
- Typically followed by a discovery verb: 分かった, 判明した, 見つかった, あった, なかった, etc.
Formality Level
Neutral to formal — used in business reports, investigation summaries, academic writing, and formal correspondence. Also natural in spoken formal Japanese.
Meaning
"Upon doing X, [I discovered/found that] Y." Expresses that after completing an action, the speaker encountered or discovered an unexpected or noteworthy result. The key nuance is discovery upon completion — Y is something that became known or apparent as a result of doing X.
This is NOT a simple conditional or temporal sequence — there is always an element of "upon doing X, I found out that Y" (often unexpected or interesting).

Distinction from 〜たら and 〜と
| Pattern | Usage | Discovery nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 〜たところ | Completed action → discovered result | Strong — emphasizes what was found upon doing X |
| 〜たら | Conditional/temporal: "when/if X, then Y" | Weak — Y can be expected or intended |
| 〜と | Simultaneous result / natural consequence | Automatic/natural consequence, not discovery |
Example contrast:
- 電話したら、留守だった → "When I called, they were out" (neutral conditional)
- 電話したところ、留守だった → "Upon calling, I found that they were out" (emphasizes discovery)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ 明日行ったところ、会えると思う → 〜たところ cannot be used for future hypotheticals. It requires a completed past action. Use: 明日行ったら (conditional).
- ❌ 起きたところ、朝だった → This is trivial/natural consequence, not a discovery. Use: 起きたら、朝だった.
- ✓ 調査したところ、新事実が判明した (investigation → unexpected discovery: correct use)
