Pattern
〜てからというもの (te kara to iu mono)
Structure
- Verb (て-form) + からというもの
- Always describes a sustained, ongoing state that began after the trigger event
- The following clause typically uses a continuous form (〜ている, 〜になった, 〜てきた)
Formality Level
Neutral to formal — used in both spoken and written Japanese. The literary quality makes it particularly common in essays, memoirs, biographical writing, and formal personal statements. Can appear in business contexts when describing organizational change.
Meaning
"Ever since [doing X]...," "from the moment [X happened] onward..." Marks a specific turning point from which a fundamental, sustained change began and has continued. The emphasis is that this was a genuine turning point — things were one way before, and permanently/significantly different after.
Strength compared to 〜てから (simple sequence):
- 〜てから: neutral sequence — "after doing X, then Y" (no emphasis on sustained change)
- 〜てからというもの: emphatic turning point — "ever since X, things have fundamentally changed"

Distinction from 〜てから

Common Mistakes
- ❌ Using for minor or temporary changes: 昼食を食べてからというもの、眠くなった → Too trivial for からというもの; use てから instead.
- ❌ Using for the past without a sustained ongoing state → The following clause must describe something that continues.
- ✓ 「〜てからというもの、〜ようになった / 〜続けている / 〜変わった」— the sustained/ongoing quality is essential.
