〜ざるを得ない — JLPT N2 Grammar
Learn 〜ざるを得ない to express unavoidable obligation — you have no choice but to do something, despite reluctance.
Pattern
〜ざるを得ない / 〜ざるを得ません (zaru o enai)
Structure
- Verb (negative stem, ない-form without ない) + ざるを得ない
- Irregular: する → せざるを得ない (NOT しざるを得ない)
- ある → あらざるを得ない (rare/literary)
Formation: Take the verb negative (ない) form, remove ない → add ざるを得ない
- 行く → 行か(ない) → 行かざるを得ない
- 認める → 認め(ない) → 認めざるを得ない
- する → せ(ざる) → せざるを得ない
Formality Level
Formal — primarily written Japanese, formal speech. Common in business, academic, and official contexts. The spoken equivalent is 〜しかない or 〜よりしかたがない.
Meaning
"Cannot help but do X," "have no choice but to do X," "am forced/compelled to do X." Expresses a strong, reluctant obligation — the speaker recognizes that doing X is unavoidable even though they would prefer not to. There is always an element of reluctance or external compulsion.

Critical Distinction from 〜わけにはいかない

Example pair:
- 事故を起こしたので、謝罪せざるを得なかった (had no choice but to apologize — forced by circumstance)
- 友人のことを警察に話すわけにはいかない (cannot bring myself to tell the police about my friend — social/moral barrier)
Also compare with 〜ないわけにはいかない (double negative):
- 〜ないわけにはいかない = cannot NOT do X = must do X (social obligation)
- 〜ざるを得ない = forced by circumstances to do X (external compulsion)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ するざるを得ない → Irregular: する → せざるを得ない
- ❌ 食べざるを得ない (when there is no reluctance) → ざるを得ない requires genuine reluctance or external compulsion, not simple necessity.
- ✓ 薬が苦いが、飲まざるを得ない (medicine is bitter, but I have no choice but to take it — reluctant)
