The noun or phrase before もさることながら is acknowledged as noteworthy. The clause after introduces another quality that is even more remarkable or at least equally worth highlighting. Both elements are typically positive, and the overall effect is additive praise.

もさることながら acknowledges that X (the first element) is already notable, then introduces Y as something equally or even more worth mentioning. The first element is not dismissed — it is genuinely acknowledged — but the second element is positioned as particularly worth the listener's attention.

This makes the pattern useful for balanced praise that highlights multiple admirable qualities: the product's function is praised (もさることながら), but its design is also highlighted. A person's technical skill is acknowledged, but their character is singled out as equally or more important.

The pattern is always used with positive or at least neutral qualities. It would not typically be used to introduce an additional criticism. It differs from はもちろん ("of course ~, but also") in having a slightly more formal and literary register.

Common Mistakes

Using for negative qualities: もさることながら is structurally compatible with negative nouns but sounds very unnatural — it is a pattern for layered praise or positive/neutral acknowledgement.
Confusing with はもちろん: はもちろん means "~ of course, let alone ~" and has a broader range including negative contexts (もちろん批判もある). もさることながら is more specifically a literary elevation and carries a stronger formal elegance.
Using in casual speech: Sounds formal and written. In casual conversation, 〜はもちろん or 〜だけじゃなくて is more appropriate.
