〜のみか (not only... but also — literary escalation)
N1 grammar pattern 〜のみか: literary 'not only X but also Y,' escalating from X to the more surprising/larger Y. Formal and literary register.
〜のみか
Formality Level: Formal / Literary — literary prose, editorials, formal written analysis
Classical Origin: のみか combines the classical limiting particle のみ (nomi, "only/merely" — equivalent to modern だけ) with the classical interrogative/exclamative か. In classical Japanese, のみか expressed "not just X, but [even more surprisingly] Y" — a rhetorical escalation structure. The pattern appears in kanbun (classical Chinese) influenced writing and in Heian literary prose. Modern のみか retains this escalating, literary quality.
Structure
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| V (plain form) + のみか | 批判されたのみか |
| Noun + のみか | 本人のみか |
| Adj (plain form) + のみか | 複雑なのみか |
Note: The clause after のみか must escalate beyond the first clause — it must express something more surprising, more extensive, or larger in scope than what preceded のみか.
Meaning
"Not only X, but also Y (the more surprising/extensive fact)"
The key feature of のみか is scalar escalation: Y is presented as an even more remarkable or extensive fact than X. The rhetorical effect is to progressively build up the scope or severity of a situation.

Comparison with N2 Equivalent
| Pattern | Register | Meaning | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜のみか | Literary/formal | Not only X but also (more surprising) Y | Scalar escalation; formal; classical のみ base |
| 〜だけでなく | All registers | Not only X but also Y | Neutral; no escalation emphasis; most common form |
| 〜ばかりか | Semi-formal | Not only X but also Y (beyond expectation) | Semi-formal; implies Y is beyond what was already surprising about X |
| 〜はもちろん | All registers | Of course X, and also Y | Y is expected; X is the more noteworthy item |
〜のみか vs. 〜ばかりか: Both express "not only X but also Y" with an escalating nuance. 〜のみか is more literary (classical のみ base); 〜ばかりか is semi-formal and more commonly used in modern formal writing. In an N1 exam, 〜のみか signals literary register; 〜ばかりか signals formal register.
When NOT to Use
- Do not use in casual speech: のみか sounds literary and bookish in conversation. Use 〜だけでなく〜も, 〜ばかりか.
- Y must be more extensive/surprising than X: The escalation must be genuine. ❌ 彼は遅刻したのみか、また遅刻した (same level; no escalation)
- Do not use for parallel items of equal scale: 〜のみか requires a genuine "and moreover" escalation, not a simple list.
