〜といえども (although / even though — formal concessive)
N1 grammar pattern 〜といえども: formal concessive expressing 'although/even if/even though X, nevertheless Y.' Used in formal speeches, legal texts, academic writing.
〜といえども
Formality Level: Formal / Literary — formal speeches, legal documents, academic argumentation
Classical Origin: といえども derives from と (quotative particle) + 言え (imperative/conditional form of 言う, "to say") + ども (classical concessive particle). In classical Japanese, ども was the standard concessive particle (equivalent to modern けれども). The literal meaning is "even if one were to say that X." The pattern appears throughout medieval Japanese legal and philosophical texts and was the standard formal concessive in educated written Japanese. It has been maintained in formal modern writing and oratory.

When NOT to Use
- Do not use in casual conversation: といえども is distinctly formal and oratorical. In speech, use 〜でも, 〜だとしても.
- Do not use for simple personal decisions: といえども implies universal or legal-scale statements. ❌ 疲れたといえども、早く寝ます。(Too formal; use 疲れてもorいくら疲れていても)
- The main clause typically expresses a universal principle, not a personal preference: The pattern works best when the main clause expresses something categorically true or obligatorily true regardless of X.
