Pattern

Structure
- Noun A + をはじめとして + Noun B, Noun C (verbal use, introducing others after A)
- Noun A + をはじめとする + Noun (group) (attributive — modifying a collective noun)
- Noun A + をはじめ (shortened, more colloquial)
Formality Level
Formal — used in written Japanese, official speeches, academic texts, and business presentations. 〜をはじめ is slightly less formal.
Meaning
"Starting with X," "including X and others," "X and others like it." Introduces X as the most representative or leading member of a group, with the implication that other similar members also exist or are included.
The marked noun (A) is not just an example — it is the representative or most notable member. The structure signals: "X is the most prominent, and there are others too."

Common Mistakes
- ❌ りんごをはじめとして、果物が好きだ → をはじめとして requires that the marked item is the MOST NOTABLE among a specific group. If the relationship is just "examples," use 〜など.
- ✓ A社をはじめとする大手企業 → A社 is explicitly the leading/representative company of the group.
