Structure

Verb (plain form) + わけにはいかない (cannot do — social/moral prohibition)
Verb (ない-form) + わけにはいかない (cannot NOT do — double negative obligation)

Formality Level

Neutral to formal — used in both spoken and written Japanese, though more commonly in spoken formal situations, novels, and essays.

Meaning

〜わけにはいかない: "Cannot do X," "it won't do to do X," "I can't bring myself to do X." Expresses that doing X is socially, morally, or situationally impossible — not because of physical inability, but because social norms, relationships, or personal ethics prevent it. There is always an implicit "even if I wanted to."

〜ないわけにはいかない: "Cannot NOT do X," "must do X." A double negative that creates a strong obligation: because not doing X is socially unacceptable, X must be done.

Common Mistakes

❌ 水が飲めないわけにはいかない → わけにはいかない is for social/moral prohibitions, not physical ability. Use: 水が飲めない (I cannot drink water — physical).
❌ 〜ざるを得ない and 〜わけにはいかない are NOT interchangeable. ざるを得ない = forced to DO. わけにはいかない = prevented from DOING by norms.
✓ 上司の命令だから、断るわけにはいかない (cannot refuse because it's a superior's order — social norm)
