〜わけではない — JLPT N2 Grammar
Learn 〜わけではない to express partial negation — it doesn't mean that X, clearing up misunderstandings while allowing for nuance.
Pattern
〜わけではない / 〜わけではありません (wake de wa nai / wake de wa arimasen)
Structure
- Verb (plain form) + わけではない
- I-adjective (plain form) + わけではない
- Na-adjective + な + わけではない
- Noun + という + わけではない
- Noun + な + わけではない (less common)
Formality Level
Neutral to formal — used in both spoken and written Japanese. The formal written version is 〜わけではない; spoken uses 〜わけじゃない.
Meaning
"It's not that X," "it doesn't mean that X," "I don't mean to say that X." Expresses a partial negation — the speaker is clarifying that a natural inference, assumption, or extreme interpretation is incorrect, while leaving room for a more nuanced truth.
This is NOT a complete denial — it's a correction of an over-interpretation. The speaker is essentially saying: "While you might think A is the case, A is not fully accurate."

Distinction from 〜とは限らない

Example pair:
- お金持ちが幸せなわけではない → "It's not that [this specific] rich person is happy" (denying a particular inference)
- お金持ちが必ずしも幸せとは限らない → "Rich people are not necessarily happy" (general universal claim)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Using わけではない for a complete denial: 「行かないわけではない」 does NOT mean "I'm definitely not going." It means "it's not that I'm not going (I might go)." For complete denial, use 〜ない.
- ✓ 「行かないわけではないが、今は難しい」= "It's not that I won't go, but it's difficult right now."
