Pattern: 〜がちだ / 〜がちな

Structure:

Verb (masu-stem) + がちだ
Noun + がちだ
〜がちな + Noun (attributive)

Formality: Standard (spoken and written)

Meaning: "tend to ~, be prone to ~, inclined to ~" (usually negative or undesirable)

Explanation

〜がちだ expresses a tendency or proneness that is usually viewed negatively or as a problem. It does not mean simply "often" — it carries the nuance that this tendency is unfortunate, undesirable, or something to be careful about.

Common with: negative habits (遅刻しがちだ), health issues (病気になりがちだ), bad conditions (乱れがちだ), social problems (孤立しがちだ).

Important: For neutral tendencies, use 〜傾向がある instead.

The attributive form 〜がちな modifies nouns: 「遅刻しがちな人」(a person prone to being late).

Common Mistakes

❌ 私はラーメンを食べがちだ。(just means "I eat ramen a lot" — not a negative tendency)
✓ 私はラーメンを食べすぎる傾向がある。— Use 〜傾向がある for neutral habits.

❌ この地域は雪が降りがちだ。(weather patterns are neutral facts, not "tendencies")
✓ この地域は雪が多い。— Use simple adjective for factual descriptions.
