Pattern: 〜として / 〜としての / 〜とした

Structure:

  • Noun + として + [predicate/action]
  • Noun + としての + Noun (attributive)
  • Noun + とした + Noun (attributive, often "taking ~ as a basis")

Formality: Standard to Formal

Meaning: "as ~, in the capacity of ~, in the role of ~, taking ~ as ~"

Explanation

〜として marks the role, capacity, identity, function, or basis in which someone/something acts or is regarded. Common uses:

  1. Role or profession: 「専門家として参加する」— participate as an expert
  2. Function or purpose: 「証拠として使う」— use as evidence
  3. Premise or basis: 「前提として」— taking as a premise
  4. General rule/standard: 「原則として」— as a rule, in principle

The form 〜としての + Noun makes it attributive: 「教師としての責任」(responsibility as a teacher).

Common Mistakes

❌ 私は先生として好きです。(unnatural — can't directly combine with like/dislike)
✓ 先生としての彼が好きです。 or 彼を先生として尊敬しています。

❌ これをとして使う。(として requires a noun before it)
✓ これを証拠として使う。
