Stroke Order
The kanji 古 follows standard Japanese calligraphy rules: top-to-bottom and left-to-right.
- Stroke 1: The horizontal bar at the top (left to right).
- Stroke 2: The vertical line on the left (top to bottom).
- Stroke 3: The corner stroke (horizontal then vertical).
- Stroke 4: The vertical line on the right side of the box (top to bottom).
- Stroke 5: The final horizontal line closing the bottom of the box (left to right).
Radical Analysis
The kanji 古 is composed of two parts:
- 十 (Ten): Represents a long period of time or many generations.
- 口 (Mouth): Represents people passing down stories or traditions.
Analysis: The combination suggests "things that have been passed down by word of mouth through many generations," which leads to the meaning of "old" or "ancient."
Mnemonic
Imagine a ten (十)-year-old mouth (口) telling stories about the "old" days. Because it has been passed down through ten generations of mouths, it is officially "old."
