Online Communities

Discord: Vinyë Lambengolmor

Platform: Discord Level: All (advanced-focused) How to join: Find invite link through r/Tolkienlinguistics or Parf Edhellen forums

  • Quenya study
  • Writing systems (Tengwar, Cirth)

Expect responses from people who have read A Gateway to Sindarin and primary journals. Beginners are welcome but should show some prior research.

Notable Community Members (Scholars Active Online)

These scholars have produced the resources you're using and sometimes engage in community spaces:

The Tolkien linguistics community is small and welcoming to serious students. Don't be afraid to ask questions — but do show you've done basic research first.

Community Etiquette

  1. Cite your sources — "Tolkien wrote X in VT 42" is respected; "I heard somewhere that..." is not
  2. Mark Neo-Sindarin clearly — if you're asking for feedback on a composition, label which words are ᴺS.
  3. Don't claim Quenya phrases are Sindarin — this is a common beginner error; verify before posting
  4. Acknowledge uncertainty — Sindarin has genuine ambiguities; admitting "this is debated" is valued
  5. Engage with corrections graciously — if someone corrects your Sindarin, it's a learning opportunity
  6. "Tattoo translations" — many community members are tired of these; if you need a translation for a permanent purpose, ask carefully and be prepared to pay a specialist or at least offer gratitude to whoever helps
