Sindarin Vocabulary
Sindarin vocabulary guide: attested words, thematic lists, and the system of source-period marking (Sindarin, Noldorin, Neo-Sindarin).
Sindarin vocabulary is different from any natural language vocabulary you've encountered. Instead of a fixed dictionary, there are overlapping layers of Tolkien's own revisions — each with a different period label — plus fan reconstructions. Understanding these layers is essential before memorizing any words.
The Layer System
| Period | Label | Time | Usability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sindarin | S. | 1951–1973 (LotR period) | Fully canonical; always prefer |
| Noldorin | N. | 1930–1950 | Phonologically compatible; usually usable |
| Gnomish | G. | 1910–1920 | Earliest; often incompatible; rarely used |
| Neo-Sindarin | ᴺS. | Post-1973 | Fan reconstruction; must be labeled |
| ᴺS. [N.] | — | — | Neo-Sindarin derived from Noldorin original |
Always label which period a word comes from in your notes. In compositions, indicate ᴺS. words clearly.
Estimated Word Counts

Word Formation
Sindarin builds many words through compounding (combining two roots):
| Pattern | Example | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Modifier + Head | Minas Tirith | minas (tower) + tirith (watching) |
| Head + Modifier | Barad-dûr | barad (tower) + dûr (dark) |
| Prefix + Root | Edhelharn | edhel (elf) + harn (stone) |
The second element of a compound often undergoes lenition:
- Minas + tirith → Minas Tirith (t unchanged — tirith starts with t which would → d under lenition, but compound names often resist)
- Barad + dûr → Barad-dûr (d unchanged in this case)
Lenition in compounds is inconsistent — follow attested examples rather than strict rules.
Building Vocabulary: Recommended Approach
- Start with the 50 most common attested words — these appear in Tolkien's texts
- Learn the major word-building elements (prefixes, suffixes) — multiply your vocabulary
- Learn thematically — nature words first (they appear in place names you already know)
- Use Parf Edhellen daily — look up every word in Tolkien's Sindarin passages
- Build a personal Anki deck — create flashcards from words you encounter
Important Vocabulary Notes
- Many words are known only from place names and character names — infer meaning from context
- Amon (hill), dûn (west), galadh (tree) appear in dozens of names you already know
- Learning Sindarin vocabulary is inseparable from understanding Tolkien's place names and character names throughout LotR
