Sindarin Lessons
Complete 41-lesson Sindarin course: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, mutations, and composition — from beginner to advanced.
This course teaches Sindarin — the Grey-elven language of Middle-earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien — from first sounds to advanced composition. Tolkien was a professional philologist, and Sindarin is a fully consistent linguistic system with its own phonology, morphology, and grammar. It draws heavily on Welsh in its sound patterns and uses a system of initial consonant mutations that will feel familiar to Celtic language learners.
The 41 lessons are organised into three levels. Beginner lessons (1–10) cover pronunciation, core vocabulary, basic phrases attested in Tolkien's texts, and the fundamentals of plural formation. Intermediate lessons (11–31) work through the mutation system, verb conjugation across all tenses, prepositions, numbers, and specialised vocabulary domains. Advanced lessons (32–41) address the finer points of the suffix system, dialect differences between Gondorian and Doriathrin Sindarin, rare mutation types, elision, and the art of name-making. By the end you will be able to read Tolkien's Sindarin passages with confidence, construct grammatically correct original sentences, and compose Elvish names and poetry.
A note on sources: attested forms — words and phrases that appear in Tolkien's published writings — are marked S. (Sindarin) or N. (Noldorin, an earlier form that feeds directly into Sindarin). Scholarly reconstructions accepted by the Neo-Sindarin community are marked ᴺS.. Where multiple scholars disagree, the most conservative reconstruction is used and the uncertainty is noted.
