尽管 (jǐnguǎn) — although; despite; even though
HSK 3 | conjunction | introduces a concessive clause, acknowledging an obstacle while asserting a contrasting result
尽管 (jǐnguǎn)
尽管 is a conjunction that introduces a concessive clause, acknowledging a fact or obstacle while stating that it does not prevent the outcome in the main clause.
Meanings
- [conjunction] although; despite; even though (used to introduce a concessive condition that does not change the result)
Usage Note
尽管 introduces the subordinate (concessive) clause, and the main clause often uses 还是 (háishi, still), 仍然 (réngrán, still), 却 (què, but/yet), or 但是 (dànshì, but) to show contrast. The structure is:
尽管 + [concessive clause], [main clause with 还是/仍然/但是]
Compare with 虽然...但是, which is essentially interchangeable. 尽管 can feel slightly more emphatic, stressing that the obstacle is real but ultimately irrelevant to the outcome.
- 尽管很难,他还是坚持下去了。 Although it was very hard, he still persisted.
- 虽然很难,但是他坚持下去了。 Although it was very hard, he persisted.
