Lesson 9: Purpose & Goal
Express purpose, intention, and preventive actions using 为了, 以便, 以免, and related patterns at B1 level.
Overview
Purpose clauses explain why an action is taken. In Chinese, the three main purpose patterns are 为了 (in order to), 以便 (so as to conveniently, so that), and 以免 (in order to avoid, so as not to). The key challenge is understanding that 为了 is positive (you do X to achieve Y), while 以免 is negative (you do X to prevent Y from happening). 以便 falls in between: you do X so that something else becomes possible or easier. All three are common in formal Chinese writing, and controlling them adds significant expressiveness to your prose.
Learning Objectives
- Construct positive purpose clauses with 为了.
- Use 以便 to express facilitation of a subsequent action.
- Apply 以免 to express preventive purpose.
- Distinguish 防止 from 以免 and use 确保 in result-oriented purpose clauses.

Grammar Focus
Pattern 1: 为了 + Goal/Purpose + VP
Structure: 为了 + [purpose NP or VP], Subject + Main VP
为了 introduces the goal. It can appear at the start of the sentence (before the subject) or after the subject. When placed at the beginning, it emphasizes the purpose.
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| Wèile tígāo Yīngyǔ shuǐpíng, tā měitiān tīng yī xiǎoshí bōkè. | In order to improve her English, she listens to podcasts for an hour every day. |
| Tā nǔlì gōngzuò shì wèile gěi jiārén gèng hǎo de shēnghuó. | He works hard in order to give his family a better life. |
| Wèile gǎnshàng zuìhòu yī bān dìtiě, wǒmen pǎo le qǐlái. | In order to catch the last subway, we started running. |
Common mistake: Do not use 为了 before a result clause. 为了 precedes the purpose (intent), not the outcome. Use 结果 or 因此 for outcomes.
Pattern 2: 以便 + Facilitated Action
Structure: Main VP, 以便 + [facilitated result VP]
以便 is used when the main action creates a condition that makes a subsequent action possible or easier. It always follows the main action and introduces what is enabled by it. 以便 is formal and almost exclusively written.
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| Qǐng tíqián tiánxiě biǎogé, yǐbiàn wǒmen jíshí chǔlǐ. | Please fill in the form in advance so that we can process it promptly. |
| Tā jì xià le suǒyǒu yàodiǎn, yǐbiàn zhīhòu fùxí. | He noted down all the key points so that he could review them later. |
| Gōngsī gōngbù le xīn zhèngcè, yǐbiàn yuángōng liǎojiě biànhuà. | The company announced the new policy so that employees could understand the changes. |
Contrast with 为了: 为了 expresses the speaker's goal or motivation. 以便 expresses a condition created for someone's benefit or practical convenience, often with a different subject in the two clauses.
Pattern 3:
All three express preventive purpose. 以免 is a conjunction: it follows the main action and introduces what is being prevented. 防止 and 避免 are verbs: they take direct objects.
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| Qǐng duō dài yī jiàn yīfu, yǐmiǎn zháoliáng. | Please bring an extra piece of clothing so as not to catch a cold. |
| Wǒmen cǎiqǔ le cuòshī, fángzhǐ lèisì shìgù zàicì fāshēng. | We took measures to prevent similar accidents from happening again. |
| Zǐxì héduì, yǐmiǎn chūxiàn cuòwù. | Check carefully so as to avoid errors. |
Common mistake: 以免 cannot stand alone as a verb. Do not say 我以免迟到. The correct form is 我提前出门,以免迟到 (I left early so as not to be late).

In order to reduce urban traffic congestion, many cities have begun promoting public transportation. Governments have introduced a series of measures so that residents can more conveniently use the subway and buses. At the same time, some cities restrict private cars from entering the city center so as to prevent roads from becoming too congested. In order to prevent the environment from deteriorating further, some localities also encourage residents to cycle or walk. The purpose of these measures is to improve travel efficiency and ensure the city's sustainable development. In order to achieve this goal, the active cooperation of residents is also crucial.

Cultural Note
The concept of 防患于未然 (fánghuàn yú wèirán), "prevent trouble before it arises," is deeply embedded in Chinese planning culture. This proverb appears in classical texts and is cited in everything from project management to public health policy. The prevalence of 以便 and 以免 in Chinese formal writing reflects this cultural preference for anticipating problems and structuring actions to prevent them rather than reacting after the fact. When you read Chinese government documents or company policies, you will notice these constructions everywhere, signaling a forward-looking, risk-averse logic.
