Lesson 25: HSK 5 Review

Comprehensive review of B2-level grammar patterns, key vocabulary, and communication strategies developed across the 25-lesson HSK 5 curriculum.

Overview

This final lesson provides a systematic review of the B2-level competencies developed across the HSK 5 curriculum. At the B2 level, review is not simple repetition — it requires the integration of vocabulary, grammar, register awareness, and cultural knowledge into fluent, context-appropriate language use. This lesson synthesizes the key grammar patterns, high-value vocabulary items, and communication strategies from across the curriculum, providing both a diagnostic tool for identifying gaps and a framework for continued independent study beyond HSK 5.

Learning Objectives

  • Review and consolidate the key B2 grammar patterns from all 24 preceding lessons
  • Identify and actively recall HSK 5-specific vocabulary that is exclusive to this level
  • Integrate vocabulary from multiple topic domains in complex analytical sentences
  • Assess personal strengths and areas requiring further study across B2 competency areas
  • Develop a personal post-HSK-5 study plan with specific goals for advancing toward C1

Grammar Focus

Pattern Review 1: Core Formal Connectors

Overview of key formal connectors introduced across the course

At B2, the shift from B1 connectors to formal register equivalents is one of the most important grammatical achievements. The following table summarizes the key register shifts:

B1 (Informal) B2 (Formal) Lesson Function
因为...所以 由于...导致 L4 Causal chain (negative consequence)
也/还 不仅...而且 L1 Additive (formal written)
但是 尽管如此 L10 Concession (sentence-level)
对于...来说 就...而言 L2 Scoping the discussion
所以/于是 从而 L1 Formal consequence
另外 此外 L1 Discourse-level addition
表明/指出/称 L16 Reporting verbs (graduated evidentiality)

The key principle: B2 formal written Chinese uses connectors that operate at the sentence or paragraph level rather than the clause level, and favors forms borrowed from classical Chinese over modern colloquial equivalents.

Pattern Review 2: Key Grammar Constructions by Function

Analytical framing (analysis and argument)

Function Pattern Example
Scope 就...而言 就方法论而言,本研究...
Perspective 从...来看/角度来看 从历史来看,这一现象...
Domain 在...方面 在经济发展方面,中国...
Causal 由于...导致 由于通胀压力,导致...
Passive 被/受...影响 受政策影响,市场...
Impact 对...产生了...影响 对就业产生了深远影响
Measure 为了...采取了...措施 为了减排,政府采取了...
Improve 提高...水平 提高基层医疗水平
Goal 力争实现/确保 力争实现碳中和目标
Historical 标志着/在...影响下 标志着新时代的开始

Rhetorical devices

Device Pattern Lesson
Parallel structure 排比: A, B, C (三段式) L15
Rhetorical question 难道...吗?/ 怎能...? L15
Balanced values 在A与B之间寻求平衡 L8, L19
Concession + counter 尽管如此... L10
Extreme concession 退一步说,即便... L10

Pattern Review 3: Register Integration Checklist

Self-assessment: Can you produce each of these?

The following checklist identifies key markers of B2 written register competence. Each item maps to a specific lesson:

  • Formal additive: 不仅...而且 (L1)
  • Discourse addition: 此外 (L1)
  • Formal consequence: 从而 (L1)

Authentic Text

Genre: Integrative passage combining vocabulary and patterns from multiple lessons

Translation: The development history of contemporary China marks the profound transformation of an ancient civilization in the process of modernization. In terms of the economic dimension, the Reform and Opening Up policy historically inaugurated an era of sustained high-speed growth lasting decades, not only substantially improving the living standards of residents but also enabling hundreds of millions of people to escape poverty. However, due to the long-term existence of unbalanced development, the wealth gap also widened during this process, thereby triggering widespread discussion about social equity. In response to these challenges, the government has taken a series of policy measures, including advancing medical security reform, improving the level of grassroots public services, and actively championing the concept of a Community of Shared Future for Mankind in the context of globalization. Viewed from historical and philosophical perspectives, seeking a balance between efficiency and equity, tradition and modernity, is the core ethical challenge that China's development model must continuously face — and also a profound proposition that has no simple answer in history and requires continuous exploration.

Integration analysis: Count the grammar patterns from this course used in the passage:

  • 标志着 (L9), 就...而言 (L2), 在历史上 (L9), 不仅...而且 (L1), 由于...导致 (L4), 从而 (L1), 针对 (L3), 采取了...措施 (L17), 提高...水平 (L18), 倡导 (L20), 从...角度来看 (L8), 在...与...之间寻求平衡 (L8, L19), 面对 (L3).

This single paragraph uses 13 distinct B2 grammar patterns — illustrating what genuine B2 written integration looks like.

Dialogue or Monologue

Monologue: A learner reflects on completing HSK 5 study

Translation: Having completed these twenty-five lessons, I would like to review what I have gained and make some plans for future study.

First, from the grammatical level, my greatest gain is understanding the fundamental difference between written and spoken language. The use of connectors like 不仅...而且, 由于...导致, and 从而 in formal writing is completely different from saying 也, 因为所以 in speech. This awareness makes me more sensitive when reading formal texts and more precise when writing.

Second, in terms of vocabulary, I have developed a deeper understanding of advanced words like 措辞, 论证, 通货膨胀, and 算法偏见 — not just knowing their meanings, but also knowing in what contexts they are used and what register they belong to.

Third, at the rhetorical level, mastering parallel structure and rhetorical questions has made my Chinese expression more forceful and impactful. This is not just a grammatical technique but a cultural competence — understanding the modes of expression and aesthetic standards of formal Chinese contexts.

Of course, I still have quite a long way to go before truly fluent use of Chinese. My main shortcomings are: my listening speed still cannot keep up with native speakers; in spoken language I cannot yet use these written register patterns naturally; and my command of idioms still requires substantial contextual accumulation.

Going forward, I plan to focus on reading large quantities of authentic Chinese articles, especially current affairs commentaries and academic articles, while maintaining Chinese writing practice, even if only a hundred characters per day.

Learning a language is a marathon, not a sprint. I believe that with persistence, one will ultimately reach one's own linguistic heights.

Practice

Exercise 1: Comprehensive Grammar Integration Write one sentence using each of the following patterns. Each sentence must be on a different topic and should reflect genuine B2 register:

  1. 就...而言, ... (L2)
  2. 由于...导致... (L4)
  3. 为了...采取了...措施 (L17)
  4. 对...产生了...影响 (L19)
  5. 一方面...另一方面... (L10)

Exercise 2: Vocabulary Consolidation Write a connected passage of 100-120 characters on the topic of "China's role in global environmental governance." Your passage must include at least six of the following words/phrases: 碳中和, 绿色发展, 可再生能源, 全球化, 不仅...而且, 针对, 采取了措施, 倡导, 在国际上, 从而.

Exercise 3: Self-Assessment Writing Task Write a 100-120 character personal reflection in Chinese on your experience studying Chinese at the B2 level. Address: (a) which aspect of Chinese has been most challenging for you, (b) which aspect has been most rewarding, and (c) what you plan to do to continue improving. Use at least three grammar patterns from this course and at least five vocabulary items from your lessons.

Cultural or Academic Note

Completing HSK 5 represents a genuine milestone in Chinese language acquisition. Linguistically, B2 is the level at which learners cross from being "learners of Chinese" to becoming "users of Chinese" — capable of engaging authentically with Chinese culture, academia, and professional life without constant reliance on reference materials. This is the level that Chinese universities typically require for admission to regular degree programs, and it is the threshold for meaningful professional engagement in Chinese-medium environments.

The journey from B2 to C1 (HSK 6 and beyond) involves qualitative as well as quantitative changes: deeper idiom and classical reference knowledge, more natural register switching between formal and informal styles, a broader vocabulary covering highly specialized domains, and a growing intuition for the subtle connotations that distinguish near-synonyms. Most significantly, the C1 learner begins to feel the aesthetic dimensions of Chinese — appreciating the elegance of well-crafted sentences, the compression of a well-placed idiom, the rhythm of a powerful 排比 construction — rather than merely parsing them analytically.

The path forward involves immersion: sustained exposure to authentic Chinese through extensive reading, listening to lectures and podcasts, watching films and documentaries without subtitles, and most importantly, writing and speaking regularly in contexts that require genuine communication rather than display of learned patterns. Chinese is a language that rewards patience, curiosity, and love of its culture. The learner who has completed HSK 5 has earned the right to say, with appropriate modesty: 我的中文,还在路上。 (My Chinese is still on its way — there is still more to come.)
