As a verb, it means to set or formulate a topic for an examination, essay, or debate. The word is used in logic, philosophy, education, and academic writing.

Usage Notes

As a verb, 命题 (to set a topic) is used in educational contexts: 命题作文 is a prescribed essay topic as opposed to 话题作文 (open-topic essay). As a noun in logic, 命题 denotes a declarative statement with a truth value. It should be distinguished from 问题 (question/problem) and 议题 (issue for discussion): 命题 is always a declarative statement, not a question.

In philosophy, 命题 is the standard translation of "proposition" and appears frequently in works on logic, epistemology, and philosophy of language.
