Usage Notes

承载 is a highly expressive metaphor in Chinese. While 承受 (chéngshòu) means to endure or tolerate (often pain or pressure), 承载 implies actively carrying something of value or significance. The distinction is important: 承受痛苦 (to endure pain) vs. 承载历史 (to carry history).

The word is extremely common in political speeches, literary writing, and cultural commentary. The phrase X承载着Y的期望/希望/记忆 (X carries the hopes/memories of Y) is a template worth mastering. In engineering, 承载能力 (load-bearing capacity) is a technical term. 承载 can also be used for digital media: 这个平台承载了大量用户生成的内容 (this platform carries a large volume of user-generated content).

Memory Hook

承 (to receive, to take on — hands held up in offering) + 载 (to carry, to load): "receiving something and carrying it forward" — the responsibility of being a vessel for something meaningful.
