〜をもとに / 〜をもとにして — JLPT N2 Grammar
Learn 〜をもとに and 〜をもとにして to express using something as raw material, inspiration, or source for creating or analyzing something new.
Pattern
〜をもとに / 〜をもとにして (o moto ni / o moto ni shite)
Structure
- Noun + をもとに (followed by verb)
- Noun + をもとにして (followed by verb — slightly more emphatic)
- Noun + をもとにした + Noun (attributive)
Formality Level
Formal to neutral — used in academic, business, creative, and analytical contexts. Common in both written and spoken formal Japanese.
Meaning
"Based on X," "using X as a basis," "drawing from X." Expresses that something new is created, developed, or analyzed using the preceding noun as raw material, inspiration, or source. The emphasis is on using X to produce Y — X is the input material, Y is the output.
This distinguishes it from 〜に基づいて (where X is an authoritative, objective foundation) — with 〜をもとに, X is used more creatively or analytically as source material.

Common Mistakes
- ❌ 法律をもとに処罰した → 法律に基づいて処罰した (law is authoritative basis, not raw material)
