Explanation

〜に従って has two related meanings:

Meaning 1 — Compliance: Following or acting in accordance with a rule, order, manual, or standard. The agent actively conforms to an external authority. 「規則に従って行動する」(act according to the rules).

Meaning 2 — Proportional change: As one process/action progresses, another change occurs correspondingly. 「技術が進歩するに従って、生活も変化する」(as technology progresses, life also changes).

The formal written variant is 〜に従い (compress for documents and reports).

Common Mistakes

❌ 気持ちに従って泣いた。(emotional reaction — not really "compliance")
✓ 気持ちのまま泣いた。 — に従って implies following an external authority or standard, not emotional states.
