Meaning: "toward ~, against ~, in contrast to ~, in response to ~"

Explanation

〜に対して marks the target or object to which an action, attitude, or comparison is directed. Unlike the simple particle 〜に (which marks direction or indirect object), 〜に対して specifically emphasizes a response or stance directed at a target. It has three main uses:

Attitude/response directed at a target: "respond to criticism," "be kind to students"
Contrast: "compared to A, B is ~"
Policy/measure directed at something: "measures toward ~"

The attributive form 〜に対する precedes nouns: 「批判に対する返答」 (reply to criticism).

Common Mistakes

❌ 彼に対して好きです。(intending "I like him")
✓ 彼のことが好きです。 — 〜に対して is not used for personal feelings/emotions about a person.

❌ 問題に対して困っています。(awkward — 困る is an internal state)
✓ 問題に困っています。 — Use simple 〜に for internal states.
