了 (le) — completion and change-of-state particle

HSK 1 | particle | marks completed actions (post-verb) or new situations (sentence-final)

了 (le)

了 is not a simple past tense marker. It has two positions and two related functions: post-verb 了 marks the completion of an action, while sentence-final 了 marks a change of state or a currently relevant new situation.

Meanings

  1. [particle — post-verb] Marks that an action has been completed (perfective aspect).
  2. [particle — sentence-final] Marks a new situation or change of state; also used for emphasis or to soften a command.

Example Sentences

我吃了一个苹果。 Wǒ chī le yī gè píngguǒ. I ate an apple. (post-verb 了: action completed)

他走了。 Tā zǒu le. He has left. (sentence-final 了: change of state — he was here, now he is not)

天黑了。 Tiān hēi le. It has gotten dark. (sentence-final 了: state has changed)

你快点儿了! Nǐ kuài diǎnr le! Hurry up now! (sentence-final 了: urgent new situation)

Usage Notes

了 is NOT past tense. Chinese does not have tense; it has aspect. Post-verb 了 signals completion and can appear in future contexts: 明天我吃了饭再去 (Tomorrow, after I eat, I will go). Sentence-final 了 signals that something is new or changed relative to the moment of speaking. The two 了 can co-occur: 我吃了苹果了 (I have now eaten the apple). Negation uses 没 (méi) and drops 了: 我没吃苹果 (I did not eat the apple).
