的 (de) — structural particle
HSK 1 | particle | marks possession, noun modification, and nominalization
的 (de)
的 is the most common character in written Chinese. It is a structural particle with three main functions: marking possession, linking a modifier to a noun, and nominalizing a phrase.
Meanings
- [particle] Possessive marker: X的Y means "Y of X" or "X's Y."
- [particle] Noun modifier marker: links an adjective, verb phrase, or clause to the noun it describes.
- [particle] Nominalizer: placed after a phrase to turn it into a noun.
Example Sentences
这是我的书。 Zhè shì wǒ de shū. This is my book. (possession)
漂亮的女孩在那边。 Piàoliang de nǚhái zài nàbiān. The pretty girl is over there. (adjective + 的 + noun)
跑步的人是我朋友。 Pǎobù de rén shì wǒ péngyou. The person who is running is my friend. (verb phrase + 的 + noun)
学汉语的很努力。 Xué Hànyǔ de hěn nǔlì. Those who study Chinese are very hardworking. (nominalization: 学汉语的 = those who study Chinese)
Usage Notes
的 has three distinct uses that learners must separate. First, possession: pronoun/noun + 的 + noun (我的电话, my phone). Second, modification: when a modifier longer than one syllable describes a noun, 的 is usually required (漂亮的花, beautiful flowers). Short single-syllable adjectives with close noun relationships often drop 的 (大书 big book, 好人 good person). Third, nominalization: the entire phrase before 的 becomes a noun, and the head noun can be dropped if clear from context (买的 = what was bought, 跑步的 = the one who is running).

Memory Hook
的 ends nearly every Chinese phrase that modifies something — think of it as the glue that holds a description to its noun.
