谢谢 means "thank you." It is the standard, all-purpose expression of gratitude in Mandarin and is used in virtually all social contexts.

Usage Notes

谢谢 is followed by the person's name or pronoun to specify who you are thanking: 谢谢你 (thank you, to one person), 谢谢您 (thank you, formal). You can also follow it with a verb phrase: 谢谢你来 (thank you for coming). The standard responses are 不客气 (bù kèqi, you're welcome — lit. no need to be polite) and 没关系 (méi guānxi, it's nothing — used more when someone apologizes, but also acceptable here). For stronger thanks, use 非常感谢 (fēicháng gǎnxiè). Note: 不客气 responds to thanks; 没关系 responds more naturally to apologies.
