Overview
Modern Chinese communication is dominated by smartphones and apps, especially WeChat. This lesson covers the vocabulary and structures for making phone calls, sending messages, and discussing digital communication. These phrases come up constantly in daily life and are essential for staying connected in a Chinese-speaking environment.

Pattern 1: Verb + Object compounds for communication
Structure: Verb + Object as a compound (打电话, 发短信, 加微信)
Chinese communication verbs often combine a verb with an object to form a compound that acts as a single unit. These are best learned as whole phrases.

Common mistake: Do not separate the verb from its object when inserting another element. You cannot say 我打了给你电话. The correct form is 我给你打了电话, where 给你 comes before 打电话.
Pattern 2: 现在方便...吗？ (checking availability)
Structure: 现在 + 方便 + Verb Phrase + 吗？
方便 (convenient) is used to politely check whether someone has time or is in a suitable situation to do something. It is softer and more considerate than asking directly.

Common mistake: 方便 is about situational convenience, not physical ease of movement. Do not confuse it with 容易 (easy) or 简单 (simple).
Pattern 3: 在线 / 不在线 and connectivity expressions
Structure: Subject + 在线 / 不在线 / 信号不好

A: 方便，你说吧。 Fāngbiàn, nǐ shuō ba. Yes, go ahead.
B: 我刚才给你发了一条短信，你收到了吗？ Wǒ gāngcái gěi nǐ fā le yī tiáo duǎnxìn, nǐ shōu dào le ma? I just sent you a text message. Did you receive it?
A: 没有？我看看。哦，收到了！你说明天下午开会？ Méiyǒu? Wǒ kànkan. Ō, shōu dào le! Nǐ shuō míngtiān xiàwǔ kāi huì? No? Let me check. Oh, got it! You said there's a meeting tomorrow afternoon?
B: 对，三点。如果有问题，在微信上联系我。 Duì, sān diǎn. Rúguǒ yǒu wèntí, zài Wēixìn shang liánxì wǒ. Right, at three o'clock. If you have any questions, contact me on WeChat.

Cultural Note
WeChat (微信, Wēixìn) is not just a messaging app in China; it is a complete life platform used for messaging, voice calls, video calls, payments, news, and even official government services. Asking someone for their WeChat (加微信) rather than their phone number is now the standard way to exchange contact information. Not being on WeChat in China is the equivalent of not having a phone number, so setting up an account is one of the first practical steps for anyone living or working in a Chinese-speaking environment.
