举办 (jǔbàn)

举办 means to hold or host an organized event such as a conference, exhibition, competition, or ceremony. It implies that the subject is the organizer and host of a formal activity. It is more formal than 开 and more specific than 组织 in that it always refers to events.

Usage Notes

举办 is always used with formal, organized events — you cannot use it for casual gatherings. Compare 举办会议 (hold a formal conference) with 开会 (have a meeting, more everyday). A useful formal pattern is X 将于 Y 地点举办 Z 活动 (X will hold Z event at Y location), frequently seen in official announcements and news reports.
