Usage Notes

因此 is a formal connective used extensively in written Chinese, academic writing, news reports, and formal speeches. It is equivalent to 所以 (therefore) but more formal and better suited to logical argumentation. In writing, 因此 often introduces the conclusion of a cause-effect relationship established in the preceding sentence.

Compare 因此 with 因而 -- they are nearly synonymous, but 因此 is more commonly used across all formal registers, while 因而 can sound slightly more literary. Both are more formal than 所以.
