Usage Notes

干预 carries a neutral to slightly negative connotation -- it suggests involvement in what is properly someone else's domain. In international relations, 干预内政 (interference in internal affairs) is a strongly charged phrase expressing sovereignty concerns. In medical and social work contexts, however, 干预 can be positive (medical intervention, crisis intervention).

Contrast with 介入 (to get involved), which is more neutral and describes entering a situation, and 干涉 (to interfere), which is more negative and often used in diplomatic protests. 干预 sits between the two.

Memory Hook

干 (to do/handle) + 预 (beforehand/in advance) -- stepping in to handle things in advance of a worse outcome; "getting your hands in" before things go wrong.
