Usage Notes
期待 emphasizes hopeful, emotionally positive anticipation. It contrasts with 期望 (qīwàng), which has a stronger sense of "hoping that" something will happen (often used by superiors toward subordinates), and 预期 (yùqī), which is a more neutral, analytical expectation used in business and academic contexts.
期待 is natural in personal and social contexts: looking forward to an event, a meeting, or a result. In letters and emails, 期待您的回复 (looking forward to your reply) is a standard polite closing phrase.
Memory Hook
期 means "a set period of time" or "to hope/expect." 待 means "to wait." Together, 期待 is "waiting for a set time" -- that eager, hopeful waiting for something you really want to arrive.
