Usage Notes
此外 is a formal connective typically used in written Chinese or formal speech. It appears at the beginning of a new sentence or clause to introduce an additional point. Unlike 而且 (érgqiě), which is more commonly used mid-sentence, 此外 tends to begin a new sentence and carries a slightly more formal register.
Note the difference between 此外 and 另外 (lìngwài): both mean "in addition," but 另外 can also mean "another" as an adjective, while 此外 is purely conjunctive. In formal writing, 此外 is often preferred for its concise, literary quality.
Memory Hook
Think of 此 (this/here) + 外 (outside/beyond) -- "beyond this point" -- there is something more to add.
