Usage Notes

范例 is more formal and elevated than 例子 (example -- neutral, everyday). 范例 implies the example is exemplary and instructive -- worth imitating or studying. Compare with 典范 (dǐanfàn -- model/paragon, often applied to persons of exemplary character) and 榜样 (bǎngyàng -- role model/example, often for behaviour and moral conduct).
