Usage Notes
信息茧房 is a Chinese term coined by legal scholar Cass Sunstein (translated into Chinese from his concept of the "information cocoon" in his book Republic.com). The metaphor of a silkworm's cocoon (茧) is apt: the cocoon is self-spun and encloses the creature inside. In Chinese digital culture and academic discourse, it is used widely to describe algorithmically reinforced echo chambers.
This term is distinctly more literary than "filter bubble" (过滤泡沫) and is preferred in Chinese academic and media writing. It frequently appears in discussions of social media platforms, recommendation algorithms, political polarization, and media literacy.
Memory Hook
信息 (information) + 茧 (silkworm cocoon) + 房 (room/house) — you are a silkworm living inside a cocoon-room made of information, sealed off from the outside world.
