Usage Notes
收益 is predominantly used in financial and business writing. It is more formal than 利润 (lìrùn, profit) and often appears in investment contexts where the focus is on what is received back from an outlay. 收益率 is particularly common in discussions of financial products.
At B2, learners reading Chinese economic news or business contracts will encounter 收益 frequently. Note that it can refer to financial gain broadly and does not always imply the deduction of costs the way 净利润 does.
Memory Hook
收 means "to receive" and 益 means "benefit." Put them together and you literally "receive benefits" -- the definition of a return on investment.
