文体 (wéntǐ)

文体 refers to the stylistic form or genre of a piece of writing, encompassing both its structural conventions and its expressive register. It is distinct from 风格 (fēnggé), which focuses on an individual author's personal style. 文体 is used in academic and educational contexts to classify texts by type, such as argumentative, narrative, or expository writing.

Usage Notes

文体 has two slightly different emphases: it can mean literary genre (the category a text belongs to) or writing style (the manner of expression). In Chinese language education, 文体 often appears when teaching students to distinguish essay types: 议论文 (argumentative), 记叙文 (narrative), 说明文 (expository), and 应用文 (practical writing). It is a formal term rarely used in everyday speech.

Note that 文体 (wéntǐ) should not be confused with 体育文化 or sports-related usage. In some informal contexts, 体 alone may refer to style, but 文体 as a compound always refers to written form.

Memory Hook

文 is writing; 体 is body/form — the "body" or "shape" that your writing takes is its 文体 (genre or style).
