消极 (xiāojí)

消极 describes a negative, passive, or pessimistic attitude or approach -- the opposite of 积极 (jījí, positive/active). It implies a lack of initiative, motivation, or optimism.

Usage Notes

消极 is the direct antonym of 积极 (jījí, positive/active/proactive). Both are commonly used in educational, psychological, and professional settings to describe mindsets and behaviors. While 消极 can describe both an attitude (pessimistic) and a behavior (passive/inactive), the context usually makes the meaning clear.

Note that 消极 does not mean "negative" in the mathematical sense (负 fù is used for that) nor in the test result sense (阴性 yīnxìng). Its usage is restricted to attitudes, behaviors, emotions, and their effects.
