Usage Notes
数据 is always used as an uncountable mass noun in Chinese -- you do not say 一个数据 to mean "one piece of data." Instead, use 一条数据 (one data point) or 一组数据 (one dataset). The plural 数据们 does not exist.
数据 has become a cornerstone of modern Chinese vocabulary. It appears in science, business, politics, and everyday conversation about technology. B2 learners should also know 数据库 (database), 数据分析 (data analysis), and 数据隐私 (data privacy) as closely related terms.
Memory Hook
数 means "number" and 据 means "to hold/evidence." Data is the numbers you hold as evidence -- the quantitative proof behind any claim.
